A Working Day
Welcome into the warmth! Outside, it's snowing and about 20 degrees below zero. With the help of the small stove, the thin wooden walls and simple glass windows can shield us from the worst cold. In the box under the chair, there's coal that we use to fuel the stove.
To use the track cleaning wagon, it needs to be coupled behind the locomotive. Then, the container for compressed air needs to be filled. It's located out on the platform you came up on. Hoses are connected, and the shut-off valves are opened. Then, the container is filled with air until the pressure gauge shows 5 kg. The pressure gauge resembles a clock and is located next to the door you entered through. It measures the air pressure in the system.
Next, the lifting mechanism for the ploughs needs to be tested, and one of the handles at the two doors is turned to lift or lower the ploughs. With the power from the compressed air, the ploughs can now be raised and lowered. The plough at the back of the train is the one we use.
With the handle, we can then lift the ploughs at level crossings and other obstacles along the line. You're welcome to try the handle, but as the wagon is currently positioned, the snowploughs cannot be raised and lowered.
The red handles are emergency brakes. They can be used if something goes wrong and the train needs to stop quickly.
