Coal Buns and Oat Drink
The navvies worked hard and needed nutritious food. They often joined forces in food groups and hired a cook. But sometimes they had to fend for themselves. Then the menu was simple. A clear favourite, alongside American pork and herring, were coal buns. These were made from a dough consisting of wheat flour, salt, and water, rolled into buns and fried in lard.
According to the stories, the navvies liked to drink. Strong beverages were undoubtedly popular, but during work, it wasn't feasible.
Instead, they quenched their thirst with oat drink. They took a bucket of water, added a handful of oatmeal, and stirred. A refreshing drink was ready!
On another note, we can tell the story of SJ's director general Granholm, who was visiting during the construction of the Inland Railway. He thought his navvies had done a good job, so he raised his voice at the communal dinner and asked:
"May I offer you champagne?"
The answer came quickly from one of the corners.
"Yes, damn right, we'll drink anything."
