Distant Signal
The signal informs the locomotive driver about what the following main signal indicates. The distant signal is placed at braking distance, which means it is positioned far enough before a main signal for the locomotive driver to be able to stop the train before passing the signal.
The distance varies depending on the railway's maximum allowed speed, gradient, and visibility conditions but typically amounts to 1000 metres.
