Doubling Up
An important part of modernizing the railway is the expansion to double tracks. Double tracks create better opportunities for commuting and freight transport.
An important part of modernizing the railway is the expansion to double tracks. Double tracks create better opportunities for commuting and freight transport.
One of the railway lines currently being expanded is the West Coast Line between Gothenburg and Lund. The West Coast Line also serves as a crucial link for long-distance train traffic, such as between Copenhagen and Oslo.
The single track over the Hallandsås Ridge, completed in 1885, was long a bottleneck for train traffic along the West Coast Line. Steep gradients and sharp curves meant that trains could not run at full speed or with maximum load.
With two single-track tunnels through the Hallandsås Ridge, the railway can now accommodate longer and heavier freight trains and faster passenger trains. Instead of the previous four trains per hour, the line can now be serviced by up to 24 trains per hour. The Hallandsås Ridge tunnels were inaugurated in December 2015.
