Dual-mode Vehicle
International 1971
This work vehicle is designed to operate on both railways and roads. It could therefore be driven on regular roads to a railway crossing and only there be placed on the tracks, much closer to the worksite. This way, it avoided blocking the railway for other traffic.
During the early days of electrified railways, maintenance of the overhead lines was handled by repair trains. These consisted of one or two railway cars with a work platform on the roof, pulled by a battery-powered locomotive. In the 1950s, repair trains began to be replaced by rail and road vehicles with a raised and rotating work platform on the roof.
This vehicle was originally stationed in Kiruna but has also been used at the SJ School in Ängelholm. It is now owned by the Railway Museum in Gävle.
