Portable Telephone Device

Used for telephoning from the railway between stations.

For overhead lines: the telephone was connected directly to the line wires.

For cable lines: the telephone was connected to telephone pairs in signal cabinets or to telephone posts placed every third kilometre along the railway.

Field telephones were also used by train drivers who could establish contact with signallers from telephone posts.
