Four Tracks
The railway line between Malmö and Lund is today one of Sweden's most important routes, both nationally and internationally. It is also one of our busiest. To increase capacity, the expansion from two to four tracks is now being carried out in stages.
The capacity of a double track decreases significantly when fast and slow trains are mixed. Long safety distances are required to prevent trains from catching up with each other. Therefore, the capacity of a railway line increases greatly through expansion from two to four tracks. This also reduces sensitivity to disruptions, with improved punctuality as a noticeable effect.
During the expansion to four tracks between Malmö and Lund, significant efforts are also being made to reduce railway noise in nearby communities. In many areas, the railway is lowered several meters relative to the surrounding ground. A tricky detail is that the railway line must function throughout the construction period. Therefore, two temporary tracks are built on sections where the railway will be lowered.
The expansion from single track to double track began around the beginning of the 1900s. An early example is found between Malmö and Lund. This stretch was the first railway in Sweden to be built between two major cities, inaugurated in 1856.
By 1901, it was completed with double tracks. Since the 1990s, expansion to four tracks has been discussed on this stretch.
Everyone benefits from four tracks
The guarded railway crossing in Åkarp between Malmö and Lund has long been a nuisance for many road users. During the busiest hours of railway traffic, the barriers are down for 45 minutes per hour. As part of the expansion to four tracks, the railway crossing will be replaced with a bridge.
