Motorized Draisine MDR 072 3562
This draisine was part of a series of 195 draisines delivered by Kalmar Verkstad, KVAB, to the Swedish State Railways (SJ) from 1959 to 1965. They were originally called MDR 131 and were equipped with Volvo car engines. The draisine weighs one and a half tonnes and could carry an additional tonne.
The draisine was used for transporting personnel and tools to various track maintenance sites. It could be operated while other vehicles were on the line, but only at a speed slow enough that it could stop within half the visible distance. To further increase safety, each person riding in the draisine had to sit near a door, to be able to quickly jump off in case an oncoming train approached. For such trips, a maximum of six people could be transported.
If more people needed to be carried, the journey had to be arranged as a train, in which case they would be alone on the track. However, it's said that sometimes the rules were bent, and more than the six people sitting by the doors were taken along. A common code of honor was that family providers sat by the doors, while bachelors sat in the middle...
