"Moving Pictures", Film Footage from Åmål and Säffle, 1909
Certainly it would have been ideal if we could show film footage taken before Sweden got its railway in 1856. Unfortunately, film technology had not been invented then. However, the society we encounter in the 1909 film remains largely unchanged since the mid-1800s.
Horse and carriage are a common sight in the bustling streets. Åmål had not yet received a railway at the time of filming, while Säffle had one since 1879, primarily built for the city's paper industry.
In 1897, twelve years before this film was shot, the first Swedish film recording was made. Initially, it was the technology of the “moving picture” that impressed audiences, rather than the content shown on the screen. A diverse program of short nature films, documentaries, and sketches could be seen in cinemas. Longer feature films were rare.
Documentaries could showcase sporting events, exhibitions, celebrations, markets, demonstrations, and royalty. Many cities were documented on film for tourism purposes, showing street and park life along with landmarks and monuments. Our film footage from Åmål and Säffle serves as good examples of this.
