Narrow-Gauge Locomotive
SJ BYCF no. 46 1941
As one of ten identical narrow-gauge locomotives at SJ's central construction warehouse (BYCF), this locomotive rolled during the 1940s and 1950s at various track construction projects. Among other things, they were used for transporting earth and stones during the expansion of the Southern and Western main lines from single track to double track. This locomotive had the designation BYCF no. 46 at SJ.
The ten locomotives were manufactured in 1941 at Sala Maskinfabriks AB. At that time, World War II was ongoing, and import problems prevented the locomotives from being equipped with their usual English-made diesel engine. Instead, they were fitted with a Swedish-made engine for producer gas. Producer gas was a common fuel during World War II and was produced by burning wood chips, charcoal, or coal in a container directly on the vehicle.
After the war, this locomotive was converted to diesel operation and had its final use at SJ's railway sleeper impregnation plant in Nässjö during the 1970s and 1980s.
The locomotive has recently regained what is likely its original colouring. BYCF no. 46 and the tipping wagon beside it are on loan from the museum association Risten - Lakviks Railway in Östergötland.
