Sans Pareil (Without Equal) was built by Timothy Hackworth. The locomotive had an outdated design compared to its competitors and was actually too heavy to compete.

It consumed enormous amounts of fuel, made a lot of noise, and was slow. Despite the construction breaking down several times, it managed to complete most of the competition trials.

However, after the competition, the locomotive was sold to a smaller railway nearby, where it was used for the next 15 years.
