Snowplough
Late 1800s
This plough was used for manual snow clearing on the tracks at Hennans station in Hälsingland. The station opened in 1881, and this type of plough was very common during the latter part of the 1800s. Here's what was written about this type of plough in SJ's 50-year anniversary publication from 1906:
"The plough is maneuvered with handles attached to the plank, similar to a regular field plough, and sometimes one man's strength alone is sufficient to move the plough forward, but usually one or two men are required as pullers. When such a plough is moved with the wider part of the plank's front end lowered inside the rail, the snow is collected along the inner side of the rail and carried away from the track by the wing."
The snowplough is a predecessor to the track cleaning wagon next to it, serving the same purpose. It is on loan from the Railway Museum in Gävle.
