Electricity from the power companies travels through the general power grid to the railway. To use electricity on the railway, it needs to be adapted. This adaptation occurs in various steps at so-called substations.

Substations are located along the railway approximately every 10 kilometres. Even today, equipment mounted on railway wagons can be found in many places. They were manufactured to be easily movable, for example, during repairs or in times of war.
