The Platelayer’s Post
1850s type
The platelayer’s post was used so that the platelayer's superiors could check that he was indeed carrying out his duties.
When the platelayer had inspected his stretch on days with odd dates, he would hang the white plaque marked '1' at the top of the post. On days with even dates, he would hang the black plaque marked '2'. When the foreman or other officers passed by – by train or trolley – they could easily check if the platelayer had completed his round for the day. If it was an even day and the white sign was still hanging up, the platelayer could expect a reprimand.
