The Track System at Höganäs
In 1798, Sweden's first outdoor track system was opened. The track connected the port of Höganäs with the various shafts of the newly established coal mine outside the village.
The "wagon road," as it was called, was constructed by the Englishman Thomas Stawford. The wagons were made of wood and had cast iron wheels. The rails were made of wood but were eventually covered with cast iron plates.
The map is from 1813. It shows how the track branched off to different mine shafts.
The large picture on the wall shows the mining area in 1805. It illustrates how the wagons carrying coal were pulled on rails by horses.
