The World's Largest Märklin Locomotive, Da 903
In 1957, the well-known German toy manufacturer Märklin presented its first model railway locomotive based on a Swedish design. The model depicted the Da locomotive type and was designated Da 884. Like all SJ locomotives at the time, the model was painted brown.
However, selling a brown model locomotive in Germany was not feasible. In Germany, electric locomotives were green, so a green version of the Da 884 was produced for the German market. Over the years, it became a collector’s item, even though it lacked a full-scale counterpart.
In preparation for the 100th anniversary of electric train operations in Sweden in 2015, the company NetRail, in collaboration with Märklin, secretly created the world's largest Märklin locomotive. Using the green model as inspiration, the full-scale Da locomotive 903 was repainted and outfitted with all the model’s distinctive features.
Subsequently, Märklin released a special anniversary edition of the green Da locomotive, now also marked with the designation Da 903.
