Transportation and the Environment
Since the 1950s, the number of motor vehicles in Sweden has increased by 1500 percent/15 times. Consequently, our carbon dioxide emissions have also increased significantly, negatively affecting the environment.
Among motorized modes of transportation, trains, buses, and subways are the most environmentally friendly options, measured per passenger kilometre. Despite this, we use fossil-fuelled cars much more than all other modes of transportation combined.
By replacing as many car trips as possible with more environmentally friendly alternatives, we achieve the greatest environmental impact.
Taking the train from Trelleborg to Riksgränsen results in carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to about 12 millilitres of gasoline.
If you choose to use the car, you would need to fill up around 200 litres of gasoline to cover the same distance.
