Travel Map of Southern Sweden
1830
This map depicts the travel routes in southern Sweden before the introduction of railways. Journeys took place via poorly maintained roads or by boat across seas, lakes, and waterways.
Along the roads, inns were situated close to each other, and the distance could easily be divided into daily stages. The distances between these inns are marked on the map in quarters of a Swedish mile, also known as a “fjärdingsväg,” equivalent to 2672 metres. The Swedish mile was abolished when the metric system was introduced in 1889.
