The Öresund Bridge
The model represents a part of the Öresund Bridge at a 1:2 scale. It shows the construction and the different layers of rustproof paint. Since the bridge was built between 1995 and 2000, it has been exposed to weather and wind, and now it is due for reinforcement painting. The work is expected to be completed by 2032. In conjunction with this, the model has also been repainted, in collaboration with the Öresund Bridge Consortium.
The Öresund Bridge mainly consists of steel beams resting on massive concrete pillars. By reducing the beams into a truss (the zigzag pattern in the image), the amount of metal was minimized without compromising load-bearing capacity. The beams were also made lighter by being hollow, which allows the bridge to span 140 metres between pillars. The steel structure of the Öresund Bridge was protected from rust during its construction with five layers of paint.
During the reinforcement painting, the bridge will receive three additional layers of paint. The inside of the beams remains unpainted, with rust prevention instead achieved using dehumidifiers.
